SOIOP

Follow the Trail to Old Ivory!

Introduction

"Old Ivory to the North Woods" was presented at the 2023 SOIOP convention. It's not a discovery of interesting new Ohme pieces purchased in Maine, but instead of interesting places in Maine that advertised old Old Ivory between 1903 and 1916. I've never been to Maine (tried to a few times). I will have fun touring these towns when I retire!

Included on this web page is an Old Ivory ad dated 1925 (I leave it to the reader to find it) that most probably is not for Ohme Old Ivory. I firmly believe that the sale of Ohme Old Ivory was discontinued in 1917 when the United States prohibited German imports in response to World War I, and changing public taste and economics caused the Ohme factory not to resume it when the import ban ended in 1921.

SOIOPS know Maine is where the "action was" for Old Ivory. For example, here are four different retailers in Lewiston, Maine that sold Old Ivory:

  • A.L. & E.F. Goss Co.
    41-43-45 Main St
    Lewiston Maine
  • Bradford, Conant & Co.
    199-203 Lisbon Street
    Lewiston Maine
  • Doyles - The Specialty House
    89 Lisbon Street
    Lewiston Maine
  • Great Department Store of the Co-Operative Association of America, Formerly B. Peck Co.
    Main and Chapel Streets
    Lewiston Maine

Let's go back in time to Maine, when and where Old Ivory was king! Here are the towns we'll be exploring:
